9. How does cataract surgery work? The operation is performed under local anaesthesia and lasts 10-15 minutes. During cataract surgery, the opacified natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. There are two types of lens implants: monofocal and multifocal. In the multifocal category, there are trifocals and EDOF (extended depth of focus). Multifocals offer all-round independence.
