Papillomas - what are they and how are they treated?

Papiloamele sunt excrescențe cutanate benigne cauzate de virusul HPV. Acestea pot apărea în diverse zone ale corpului și sunt adesea confundate cu alunițele. Simptomele papilomelor includ mici protuberanțe, de obicei de culoare carne, care se pot dezvolta sau crește în număr. Tratamentul pentru papiloame poate implica opțiuni precum înghețarea cu azot lichid, electrocauterizarea sau chiar îndepărtarea chirurgicală. Înțelegerea cauzelor papilomelor și opțiunilor de tratament este crucială pentru gestionarea eficientă a acestor formațiuni neplăcute și pentru menținerea sănătății pielii.

What are papillomas?

It is the eyelid skin manifestation of papilloma virus infection. Papilloma is one of the most common eyelid tumour formations. Most of the time it is benign, but aggressive malignant forms can also occur.

They can be located anywhere on the epithelial surface, but in some cases they occur exclusively in the eye. It can occur both as isolated local pathology and as a result of systemic disease.

Papillomas may occur in solid or cyst form, epithelial or subepithelial location, may be single lesion or
multiple, and in some cases can be mistaken for a malignant formation.

Types of epithelial tumours

Hyperkeratosis (thickening of the keratin layer): presents as a local, adherent lesion

Parakeratosis: also a form of hyperkeratosis, but represented by incomplete keratinization.

Dyskeratosis: is an abnormal keratinization of the cell layers, outside the squamous layer

Achanthosis or thickening of the squamous layer: commonly seen in proliferative epithelial lesions

There are both clinical and morphological variations in all forms of epithelial tumour formations.This often creates confusion in diagnosis and treatment. Histopathological examination is necessary for a definite diagnosis.

Squamous papilloma - is the most common eyelid epithelial tumor lesion. It can present as a single or multiple form, and most often involves the free edge of the eyelid. The base of implantation can be sessile or pedicled, and the diagnosis can be made according to the clinical picture or histopathological examination.

Differential diagnosis se face cu: keratoza seboreica, verucca vulgara si nevul intradermic. Tramentul acestei leziuni este chirurgical, urmat de examenul histopatologic.

Are there any symptoms of this condition?

In some cases local embarrassment may be felt depending on the size of the tumour, but most of the time the symptoms are absent and the discomfort is more aesthetic.

What is the treatment for papillomas?

Monitoring of the lesions, followed by surgical treatment by classical surgery, diathermo-coagulation or laser ablation.

Anaesthesia is local and is performed with xylin.

Excision is a quick, painless procedure followed by a fast and uncomplicated healing with immediate results.

Post-excision local treatment is done with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory ointment, and if the lesion required suturing, the sutures will be removed at the doctor's indication after a few days.
