1. What is cataract?

Cataract is the process by which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. Proteins in the lens break down and make things look blurry, hazy or less coloured. As the lens becomes cloudy with age, it no longer lets some light through, leading to blurred vision.

2. Cataract symptoms:

The more obvious symptoms occur when the cataract becomes more mature and occupies more of the lens:

  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing a double image
  • Increased sensitivity to light (headlights approaching at night, snow)
  • You need more light when you read
  • Bright colours are perceived as faded or yellowish

    3. Establishing the diagnosis of cataract

    To establish the diagnosis an ophthalmological consultation is necessary, which includes

  • visual acuity testing,
  • examination of the anterior pole,
  • pupil dilation to reveal the type and degree of cataract
  • examination of the fundus to assess ocular status.

    • Cataracts and sight loss should not be accepted as an inevitable part of the ageing process.

    4. Cataract treatment

    The only treatment for cataracts is surgery. The technique that removes cataract is called phacoemulsification and is based on ultrasound.

    5. How does cataract surgery work?

    The operation lasts 10-15 minutes and during the operation cataract surgery, the natural opacified lens of the eye will be removed and replaced with a lens artificial lens.

    7. How long does it take to recover from cataract surgery?

  • 99% of cataract surgery patients see very well the day after surgery and can partially resume their usual activities
  • You will administer an eye treatment for 4 weeks postoperatively
  • Avoid getting soap or water directly into your eyes
  • Do not rub or press on the eye for 4 weeks postoperatively.
  • Bright colours are perceived as faded or yellowish

    8. What happens if I neglect cataracts?

    Cataracts are often overlooked by many people and the reasons for this include several "myths":

  • "I'm afraid to have cataract eye surgery" You can go home immediately after surgery and resume your normal activities the day after surgery.
  • "I will only treat cataracts when they mature" Waiting for cataracts to "ripen" makes surgery more difficult, resulting in a more complicated procedure and higher risk.
  • "We can live with cataracts" Because of low vision, you can no longer perform normal activities such as reading, watching TV, you are in constant danger of falling or bumping into objects you can't see.

    Dr. Alexandra Preda is a primary ophthalmologist at Munteanu Center since 2017, specializing in cataract surgery, laser surgery for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, intraocular injections for retinal pathology. He is Head of Works at UMF "Victor Babes" in Timisoara, specializing in Ophthalmology and Doctor of Medical Sciences.     Dr. Manuela Buzescu is a primary ophthalmologist with a vast experience and activity of almost 3 decades in the field, with hundreds of victories in the fight against eye diseases. Dr. Buzescu is also a Primary Ophthalmologist at the Timisoara Municipal Emergency Hospital, an elite surgeon in ocular microsurgery and a member of the Romanian Society of Ophthalmology (SRO), the Romanian Glaucoma Society (SRG) and the Romanian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (SRCCR).     Dr. Servet Yașar is an expert with more than 15 specialist credentials in the field of ophthalmology, attending courses in countries such as Turkey, Cyprus, Czech Republic and the United States.
