Botulinum toxin injection

1. Botox - the elixir of youth

Botox was the first drug to use botulinum toxin. Other products now include abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc) and incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin). Each is a little different, especially when it comes to dosage units and period of action.

Botox injections use a toxin called onobotulinumtoxinA to temporarily prevent a muscle from moving. This toxin is produced by the microbe that causes botulism.

Botox injections are noted primarily for their ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. They are also used to treat conditions such as neck spasms (cervical dystonia), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), overactive bladder and lazy eye. Botox injections can also help prevent chronic migraines.

2. Indications for botox injections

Botox injections block certain chemical signals from the nerves, especially signals that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes.

3. What cosmetic conditions can be treated with Botox?

From a cosmetic/aesthetic point of view Botox injections are used to treat the signs of ageing. This treatment can smooth fine lines and wrinkles in many areas of the face, including: eyebrows, forehead, nose, eyes, lips, chin, jaw line, neck.

Botox injections are also used to treat conditions that affect the way the body works.

  1. Muscle spasms, blepharospasm. Botox injections can help relieve contractures or spasms of the muscles around the eye.
  2. Anumite tipuri de strabism, adica fuga ochiului care poate duce la ambliopie (ochiul leneș). Cea mai frecventă cauză a ochiului leneș este un dezechilibru în mușchii responsabili de poziționarea ochiului.
  3. Cervical dystonia. In this painful condition, the neck muscles contract involuntarily, causing the head to twist or remain in an uncomfortable position.
  4. Muscle contracts. Some neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, can cause limbs to pull towards the centre. In some cases, these contracted muscles can be relaxed with Botox injections.
  5. In this condition, excessive sweating occurs even when the temperature is not hot and you are not exerting yourself.
  6. Chronic migraine. If you have migraines more than 15 days a month, Botox injections can help reduce the frequency of headaches.
  7. Bladder dysfunction. Botox injections can also help reduce bladder weakness caused by overactive bladder.
  8. Botox helps reduce pain. Botox injections are recommended for pain management. Botox blocks nerve signals that control muscle activity, resulting in relaxation and pain relief.

Botox injections can be successful in treating:

    • Back pain,
    • Sore throat,
    • Jaw pain,
    • Pain on various nerve pathways,
    • Sciatic pain,
    • Neuropathy (peripheral neuropathy),
    • Pelvic pain,
    • Chronic myofascial pain (CMP),
    • Osteoarthritis,
    • Joint pain,
    • temporomandibular joint pain.

4. Are there any risks associated with botulinum toxin injection?

Botox injections are relatively safe when performed by an experienced doctor. Possible side effects and complications include:

  1. Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site
  2. Headaches or flu-like symptoms
  3. Drooping eyebrows or eyebrows too high
  4. Crooked smile or inability to control saliva
  5. Dry eyes or excessive tearing
  6. Although highly unlikely, it is possible that the toxin from the injection could spread in the body.

Call your doctor immediately if you notice any of these effects hours to weeks after receiving Botox injections:

    • Muscle weakness
    • Vision problems
    • Speech or swallowing difficulties
    • Breathing problems
    • Loss of bladder control

We do not generally recommend that you benefit from Botox injection treatment when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Botox should not be used in people who are allergic to cow's milk proteins.

5. How to prepare for Botox injections?

It is very important to tell your doctor if you have had any Botox injections in the last four months. You should also pay particular attention if you are undergoing certain frame treatments. Tell your doctor if you are taking muscle relaxants, sleeping pills or allergy medication. If you are taking anticoagulants, antiaggregants (medicines that thin the blood), you may need to stop taking them a few days before the injection to reduce the risk of bleeding or bruising.

6. What to expect before, during and after the botulinum toxin procedure?

Before the procedure

Most people don't feel much discomfort during the procedure. But you may want to numb your skin beforehand, especially if your palms or soles are treated for excessive sweating. Your doctor may use one or more of the various methods available to numb the area, such as local anesthesia, ice anesthesia, and vibration, which uses massage to reduce discomfort.

During the procedure

Botox injections should be performed in a doctor's office. The doctor will use a thin needle to inject small amounts of botulinum toxin into the skin or muscle. The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the size of the area being treated.

After the procedure

Do not rub or massage treated areas for 24 hours. This may help prevent the toxin from spreading to a different area. You can return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. To reduce redness, swelling or bruising, do not put pressure on the treatment area for 12 hours. Remain upright (do not lie down) for three to four hours. Avoid physical exertion for 24 hours.

7. Results

Botox injections usually start working one to three days after treatment. Depending on the problem being treated, the effect can last three months or more. To maintain the effect, you will need regular injections afterwards. Eventually, however, the muscles may train to contract less. As a result, treatments may be spaced out over longer periods of time.
