Retinopathy pigmentosa or retinitis pigmentosa

Retinopatia pigmentară este o afecțiune oculară ereditară care afectează retina, și este caracterizată prin degenerarea celulelor senzoriale și acumularea de pigment. Cauzele Retinopatiei pigmentare pot fi de natură genetică, cu mutații în genele implicate în funcționarea normală a retinei. Simptomele Retinopatiei pigmentare includ pierderea progresivă a vederii periferice, vedere nocturnă redusă și dificultăți în adaptarea la schimbările de lumină. Tratamentul Retinopatiei pigmentare se concentrează pe gestionarea simptomelor și întârzierea progresiei bolii prin intermediul terapiilor cu lumină intensă și administrarea de vitamine și antioxidanți.

Diagnostic si complicatii

Pigmentary retinopathy is one of the most common inherited retinal degenerations, affecting 1 in 4000 patients. The first signs of this condition can start from childhood to after the age of 50, but it is most often diagnosed in youth. Nyctalopia, i.e. loss of night vision, is the main symptom experienced by patients who have difficulty with nocturnal or dark activities such as sofa-going at night or going to the cinema (hence the popular term 'chicken blindness'). Peripheral vision loss is also present, although asymptomatic in the early stages. If pigmentary retinopathy is associated with other macular conditions, patients may also lose central vision. Early diagnosis is essential in slowing the progression of this disease and several gene therapies are in advanced stages of research with promising results. The main investigations required are available in our clinic: widefield retinophotography, angiofluorography, electroretinogram, computerized visual field.
