Ocular ultrasound uses waves with frequencies of about 10 MHz produced by a small probe that is placed on the closed or open eye, as appropriate. With topical anaesthesia in the case of the open eye, or without anaesthesia with the eye closed, a gel is applied between the probe and the eye to remove air bubbles. This probe collects the echoes (\"<em>echo<\/em>\") of tissues that it translates into a two-dimensional image of the eyeball.<\/p><p>The denser the tissue, the brighter it will appear (hyperechogenic) and conversely, the more aerated, the less bright (hypoechoic). If the tissue is dense enough, it will also have a cone of shadow behind it, which is common in some tumours or intraocular foreign bodies. This non-invasive and painless technique can easily be performed in the office, during consultation, at the patient's bedside or in the operating room. Moreover, ultrasound can be easily performed on children without sedation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section Este asociat\u0103 cel mai adesea retinopatiei diabetice, dar poate ap\u0103rea \u0219i \u00een cazului unui traumatism sau \u00eenainte de o dezlipire de retin\u0103 regmatogen\u0103.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/profmunteanu.ro\/en\/dezlipirea-de-retina\/\">Retinal detachment<\/a>: o urgen\u021b\u0103 medico-chirurgical\u0103, mai ales atunci c\u00e2nd este recent\u0103 \u0219i incomplet\u0103, ea se prezint\u0103 la ecografie sub forma unei membrane hiperecogene cu mobilitate \u201eserpentin\u0103\u201d la mi\u0219carea ochiului.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Papillary oedema: having several causes, from intracranial hypertension, papillary drusen or various infections and inflammations, it appears as an elevated optic disc on the retina, with or without adjacent hyperechogenic calcification.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Intraocular foreign body: in the case of trauma, ocular ultrasound is mandatory if it can be performed safely. Foreign bodies made of metal, glass or wood with a posterior shadow cone can be detected.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Dislocated lens or lens implant: also following trauma, the intraocular lens can be seen in the vitreous cavity, out of its normal position behind the iris.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Intraocular tumours: both for diagnosis when using the \"A-scan\" mode and for following the evolution of a tumour by measuring its size, ocular ultrasonography remains an investigation of choice for intraocular tumours such as haemangioma, retinoblastoma or malignant
