Der Augenultraschall verwendet Wellen mit einer Frequenz von etwa 10 MHz, die von einer kleinen Sonde erzeugt werden, die auf das geschlossene oder offene Auge aufgesetzt wird. Mit \u00f6rtlicher Bet\u00e4ubung bei offenem Auge oder ohne Bet\u00e4ubung bei geschlossenem Auge wird ein Gel zwischen der Sonde und dem Auge aufgetragen, um Luftblasen zu entfernen. Diese Sonde sammelt die Echos (\"<em>echo<\/em>\") von Geweben, die es in ein zweidimensionales Bild des Augapfels umsetzt.<\/p><p>Je dichter das Gewebe ist, desto heller erscheint es (hyperechogen), und umgekehrt, je luftiger es ist, desto weniger hell (hypoechogen). Wenn das Gewebe dicht genug ist, wird es auch einen Schattenkegel hinter sich haben, was bei einigen Tumoren oder intraokularen Fremdk\u00f6rpern \u00fcblich ist. Diese nicht-invasive und schmerzfreie Technik kann problemlos in der Praxis, w\u00e4hrend der Sprechstunde, am Patientenbett oder im Operationssaal durchgef\u00fchrt werden. Au\u00dferdem kann der Ultraschall bei Kindern ohne Sedierung durchgef\u00fchrt
