Poate afecta acela\u0219i ochi \u00eentotdeauna sau poate alterna \u00eentre cei doi ochi.<\/p><p>Cauzele sunt variate \u2014 probleme de refrac\u021bie necorectate, dezechilibre musculare, afec\u021biuni neurologice sau alte boli oculare asociate. Cel mai mare risc asociat strabismului la v\u00e2rsta pediatric\u0103 este <strong>ambliopie<\/strong> \u2014 o afec\u021biune pe care medicii o numesc popular \u201eochiul lene\u0219&#8221;.<\/p><p>Iat\u0103 mecanismul: atunci c\u00e2nd unul dintre ochi este deviat, creierul prime\u0219te dou\u0103 imagini diferite \u0219i contradictorii. Pentru a evita vederea dubl\u0103 \u0219i confuzia vizual\u0103, <strong>creierul \u00eenva\u021b\u0103 s\u0103 ignore imaginea provenit\u0103 din ochiul deviat<\/strong>. La adult, acest mecanism ar produce disconfort. La copil, \u00een perioada critic\u0103 de dezvoltare a sistemului vizual, consecin\u021ba este mult mai grav\u0103: ochiul ignorat <strong>nu se dezvolt\u0103 vizual corespunz\u0103tor<\/strong>, iar acuitatea vizual\u0103 a acestuia r\u0103m\u00e2ne permanent redus\u0103 \u2014 chiar dac\u0103 ochiul \u00een sine este anatomic perfect s\u0103n\u0103tos.<\/p><p>Ambliopie poate evolua silen\u021bios \u2014 copilul nu se pl\u00e2nge c\u0103 nu vede bine cu ochiul afectat, pentru c\u0103 nu \u0219tie cum ar trebui s\u0103 vad\u0103. P\u0103rin\u021bii nu observ\u0103 nimic neobi\u0219nuit. Iar sistemul vizual continu\u0103 s\u0103 se dezvolte asimetric, l\u0103s\u00e2nd \u00een urm\u0103 o deficien\u021b\u0103 care, dac\u0103 nu este tratat\u0103 \u00een fereastra de timp potrivit\u0103, <strong>poate deveni permanent\u0103<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Fereastra terapeutic\u0103 pentru tratamentul ambliopiei este limitat\u0103 \u2014 creierul r\u0103m\u00e2ne \u201eplastic&#8221; \u0219i receptiv la tratament \u00een special p\u00e2n\u0103 \u00een jurul v\u00e2rstei de 7\u20139 ani.
